Fall 2011 Guidance Lessons

The counselors at OCE have been visiting your child’s classroom to present grade level-specific guidance lessons. The following is an overview of guidance units for the fall semester.

• During the first unit of the fall semester, the Kindergarten and 1st grade guidance lessons will allow students to enhance their character development and social skills through storytelling by professional storytellers via DVD and/or storybook. These lessons are from a program called “Life Stories for Kids (K-2).” Life Stories is a comprehensive program that combines evidence-based practices for skill-building with engaging and enjoyable storytelling. Each story is crafted to teach a different character trait or life skill.  During the second unit of the fall semester, the kindergarten and 1st grade guidance lessons will allow students to explore the variety of emotions that they experience.  These lessons are from a program called "Emotional Literacy in the Classroom".  This innovative classroom-based curriculum teaches children about emotions and helps them learn the five emotional literacy skills of recognition, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotion.

• Our 2nd grade students will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge regarding problem-solving and conflict resolution. The lessons will focus on increasing students’ ability to identify and resolve conflicts and practice skills and strategies to communicate, negotiate and solve problems.

• Our 3rd – 5th grade students will participate in a guidance unit using lessons from “Steps to Respect: A Bullying Prevention Program.” Students will learn to recognize bullying and how it differs from teasing; learn skills to refuse to be the teaser or bully; learn how to report a teasing/bullying situation to an adult; and understand the responsibility and importance of the role of the bystander.
