Spring 2012 Guidance Lessons

The counselors at OCE will continue to visit your child’s classroom to present grade level-specific guidance lessons.  The following is an overview of guidance units for the 2012 spring semester.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade
The kindergarten and 1st grade students will continue to explore the variety of emotions.  The guidance lessons are from a program called "Emotional Literacy in the Classroom".  This innovative classroom-based curriculum teaches children about emotions and helps them learn the five emotional literacy skills of recognition, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotion.  Kindergarten students will explore the emotions of proud, scared, brave, sad, lonely and surprise.  1st grade students will explore the emotions of courageous, angry, left out, afraid, guilty and shocked.

The kindergarten and 1st grade students will finish up the school year with additional lessons from a program called “Life Stories for Kids (K-2).”  These guidance lessons will allow students to continue to enhance their character development and social skills through storytelling by professional storytellers via DVD and/or storybook.  Each story is crafted to teach a different character trait or life skill.

Second Grade through Fifth Grade

The 2nd through 5th grade students will be participating in a classroom guidance unit on the topic of Conflict Resolution.  This unit will allow students to define accuratelly the word "conflict", learn the steps of how to resolve conflicts in an effective, non-violent manner, and then have the opportunity to practice these steps through role playing.  The definition of conflict that will be presented to the students during this unit is "a disagreement where one or both parties feel upset, angry, confused, or unhappy about what is happening".  The steps for resolving a conflict is 1) What is the problem? How do you feel?; 2) How can we fix the problem?; 3) Brainstorm ways to fix the problem; 4) Choose the best option; and 5) Agree on the final solution.

Third Grade through Fifth Grade

The 3rd through 5th grade students will be participating in a Test Preparation Unit prior to the administration of the End of Grade tests.  Students will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding the administration of the End of Grade test and review test taking skills and strategies.

Fifth Grade

The 5th grade students will be participating in a 2 lesson unit on the topic of Middle School Transition.  This is an exciting time for fifth graders but they have many questions.  During these lessons we will allow time to answers these questions and dispel any middle school myths the students may have.

We do not know the specifics of the middle school registration process as of today, 1/2/12,  but when the time comes we will be visiting with the students to complete their registration materials.  Additional information will be posted on this website and sent home with fifth grade students as the information is received by the Olive Chapel school counselors.
